Managing Conflict

September 12, 2018 by Teresa McCammon 16 Comments

Hey – Managing Conflict was a GREAT class.  We learned that we cannot resolve “Attitude” – when we judge another person’s ATTITUDE we are putting our own baggage into the equation.  We can only evaluate BEHAVIORS.  We can say, “A person rolled their eyes.”  “A person sighed.”  “A person yelled at another person in front of the team during the meeting.”  But we cannot really know WHY that person did that without asking them.  So – when resolving conflict we have to discuss the facts of the behaviors and not our interpretation of those behaviors.

For instance, we cannot say. “She always has a bad attitude or she is always a ‘Debbie Downer'” because that is subjective.  We only know what behaviors are not congruent with our Mission and our Core Values.

Conflict can be our biggest friend because it can deepen relationships and improve results.

I also attended Winning Work Habits! I appreciated the self reflection on what I do that might hinder my own productivity. I also really enjoyed learning new habits to start to increase my productivity including Identifying my Peak time and Breaking my Day into 4 blocks. I already work from a To-Do list and check my email periodically throughout the day – not all day. So organizing it with ABC is helpful!

I enjoyed this class so much and look forward to how it can help me at Phoenix, professionally, and at home!

It’s amazing to see how this applies not only to my work life but that it can carry over to other aspects of my life as well. I especially appreciated Terri talking about attitude and how to look at is as a behavior. We can shape behaviors and the story at the end was the absolute best!!!! We can only change ourselves. Love this.

Love, LOVE, LOVE!! Every class offered always has such a massive impact on the relationships that we work so hard on building. It is so amazing to me to put all of the teachings together with “me and my house” and see that if we apply all things to that, our house will GROW! Thank you for the lessons!

I am a little late, but wanted to reflect back on Connecting Flight. Being in Taking Flight 4 years ago, I had forgotten a lot about the class. In Connecting Flight, it was great to reflect back on the fundamentals of our culture while already knowing what it feels like to live the culture every day. I think my favorite part of the class was making an agenda for a successful standup. Sarah and I have practiced this daily and it has really helped us to become more efficient with our time and make sure we are both on the same page to kick off each day.

Wow Teresa, this is spot on! Thank you for the insight! It makes you stop to think and evaluate their actions vs. assuming they are just a Negative Nancy!

Another great class! It definitely made me think inward on how I handle myself in conflict situations. I needed to have those moments of turning the mirror on myself. I am still a work in progress, so the teachings are much needed and appreciated.

I attended Winning Work Habits on 9/6/18 and once again Terri delivered a great class! I really do enjoy attending all the class offered. We’d all like to think that we are pros at what Terri covered in WWH but truth be told, speaking for myself, I have a lot of growing to do! Finding that groove that works for you to get your work done efficiently is so key to the success we see daily here at Phoenix. Thanks for this class!

I could not agree with Amanda more. I also took the Winning Work Habits class and learned so much. As always in a Terri Tucker class. My biggest take away was “TCA”. You can use thoughts, actions, and conversation as an investment in time but, you can also use those three actions as a waste of time. It is all about prioritizing your day and investing in the things that matter the most. Another great class in the books.

Attended managing conflict on 2/8/19. Terri was amazing as always!!!! One of the biggest things I took away from the class is our goal is never to eliminate conflict. When we have such passionate employees there is bound to be different opinions/concerns and that we need to focus and manage that conflict whether large or small. Conflict resolution means that the trust in the relationship grows. I really connected with the emotional bank and how we deposit/withdrawal in our personal and professional life.

I have to say this was one of my favorite classes. I hate conflict and now i fell so much more at ease with the tools Teri taught to deal with it. I learned that conflict isn’t always bad and when we have conflict its a opportunity to grow. I love looking at it this way. thank you from the bottom of my heart for this class I loved it!!!!!

Attending this class was huge! “If conflict resolution occurs, trust grows!” I love that! Having that trust between myself and the field nurses I have the honor to work with is so crucial to the success of what we do.

Loved this class! It teaches you that conflict doesn’t have to be bad! We talked about not avoiding conflict, but to effectively focus and manage it.Conflict is a part of any relationship and decision making. We talked about anytime there is passion, challenge and progress there will be conflict. When conflict resolution occurs trust grows and we build stronger relationships with increased productivity!

I love all the classes that I have been able to participate in and always take away things that help make me a better employee and a more well rounded person. I have always looked at compromise as a good way to resolve conflict, it was a light bulb moment for me to be told that it was a low form of resolution and that a 3rd alternative should be the goal to conflict resolution.
I look at the 3rd alternative as the ability of the people involved in a conflict to find an understanding of the others position and a have the willingness to move in a direction that is mutually beneficial for all involved. Where as compromise can often mean sacrifice on one or the other party and leaves someone (if not both sides) feeling like a victim. I LOVE the idea of finding a 3rd alternative. It builds relationships, understanding, and can lead to solutions that would not have ever happened without seeking a different option.

I enjoyed this class. It really gave me some great tools to use when encountering “Debbie Downers” and how I can keep my own in check. I also never thought about how some conflict can be beneficial. It truly does take good conflict to grow and I have used this in my work and personal life a lot lately. Lastly, I loved the analogy of our emotion bank accounts. This is something I have taken to heart and am using more and more with my co-workers, family and friends. All-in-all, another great class!! Thanks, Terri!
